For those of you who might have been impacted by the recent WordPress hosting outages, it is important to know that it only affected WPX Hosting, which was ultimately acquired by Bluehost.

After yesterday’s outage, the #WPX outage page is now showing this as the problem: “Sorry, we’re having a minor problem with one of our servers. We will fix it as soon as possible.”

Managed by WPX Thousands of websites may have been affected by a WordPress Hosting outage. The problem has been going on for hours. Many clients have expressed dissatisfaction with WPX’s lack of communication.

Another member stated that while they appreciated WPX, they could have gained more goodwill if they had been more helpful with information, and that the lack of contact was unacceptable.

Is this the cause of WPX’s downtime?

WPX.net’s whois information reveals that their domain is hosted on the Steadfast ASN (Autonomous System Numbers).

ASN stands for IP address networks, and it can be used to determine what the underlying data center infrastructure is, which can occasionally provide insight into what is going on.

Steadfast has data centers in Chicago, which corresponds to WPX’s tweets indicating the problem is in one of the city’s data centers.

It’s plausible that Steadfast is the underlying infrastructure for WPX hosting, but given the lack of information from WPX at this moment, it’s difficult to determine for sure.

This support notification can be found on the Steadfast help page:

“Network intermittency is being experienced by customers due to a malfunctioning access switch.

After an initial inspection, our alerting system discovered one of our switches was running inconsistently, and the networking team analyzed a few plausible scenarios that could have caused this incident.

We were able to restore services to 60% of the affected clients within the first hour. We’re changing the item that’s causing the problem right now, and we should be back online in an hour.”

Problems can arise at any time.

In this circumstance, WPX has no control over the situation. It’s an issue with the underlying infrastructure on which they rely.

On Twitter, one client encouraged patience:

Last night, I was having Cloud Cache troubles, which I believed had been resolved, but it was a dismal way to start the week. Anyway, the @WPX Hosting crew has always been nice to me, and even if I don’t like it, I guess we just have to wait.

Because it appears that the problem is being handled, patience is a good idea. Issues like this are rarely predicted, and even if the service is hosted in the cloud, there is still hardware that can fail.
